The Evliya Çelebi Studies Center was represented with two papers at the GUHP2 Berlin Conference, organized by the Global Urban History Project in collaboration with the Center for Metropolitan Studies at Technische Universität Berlin on July 10-11, 2025.
The conference, held under the theme “Stretching The Limits of Urban Global History,” brought together more than 120 researchers from around the world. Panels addressed a wide range of topics, from environmental urbanization to port cities, infrastructure, and public health, discussing new approaches to urban history.
Associate Director of the Center, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İlhami Danış, presented his paper titled “The Rise of Sixteenth Century Izmir: A Port City’s Global Connections” on July 11 in the “Transimperial Cities” panel, evaluating Izmir’s early modern transformation and its connections to global trade networks from a spatial perspective.
Center advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yunus Uğur presented his paper “Stretching the Limits of Global History in the Early Modern Period Through Urban Heating and Cooling Practices: The Case of Istanbul” on July 10 in the “Urban Infrastructures” panel. Uğur’s study provided a new discussion framework on how environmental infrastructures in Ottoman cities can be related to global historiography.
Both presentations examined Ottoman urban history in the context of global networks and environmental practices, opening new discussions through an interdisciplinary and comparative approach.
The GUHP2 Berlin Conference provided an important platform for promoting the ongoing projects of the Evliya Çelebi Studies Center in international academic circles and for developing scientific collaborations on a global scale.
